Fandom #17: Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit

After the movies came out, I really liked LotR. Believe me, I cannot get through the books, ever: by the second book, I'm down to reading only the parts when hobbits are around, because everyone else is boringly epic and purple-prosy. Since the women in Tolkien are essentially wallpaper with names, naturally excepting Eowyn, this is mostly, if not entirely, slash recs.

LAST EDIT: 3/26/14, for more The Hobbit fics. Note that some of those have multiple excellent female characters, for once. I am grateful for Tauriel's existence. My taste in The Hobbit fics runs down two tracks: humor, and Fix-it fic.

Sites:
~
Bagenders, the Series. A take-off of the British series, Eastenders; a series of humorous fic built upon two premises: 1, the Fellowship is functionally immortal, and 2, after all this time, they've come to share a flat together.
~ The
Library of Moria Archives. THE LotR archives. Everyone and every pairing covered.
~
Adrienne's LotR Fic. Mostly sweet Frodo/Sam.

Fic: Lord of the Rings
~
Bond of Honor by Tirinwe.  Eomer saves Haldir after the battle, but not without a cost. A "bonded" fic, that actually works. Eomer/Haldir.
~
For a Star and a Half, by Cara J. Loup. Sam loves Frodo, and wishes he could get over it - or get Frodo. Sam/Frodo.
~
From One Age to Another, by Determamfidd. Legolas & Gimli go home and tell their fathers about their choices during the Ring Quest. Legolas/Gimli.
~
Not in Vain, by Lucy Hale. Merry and Pippin reach Boromir's heart during the journey. Gen.
~
Some Other End, by Lexin. AU, Boromir didn't die; consequently Denethor didn't go crazy and die, so after the war he's able to make arranged marriages for his sons - weird ones, at that. Unusual pairing of Frodo/Faramir, background Boromir/Eowyn.
~
Treasures, by BellaMonte. A stalled WIP, but the main action is done. Frodo is kidnapped at a young age. Gen.

Fic: The Hobbit
Thorin/Bilbo as focus:
~
A Glittering Abyss, by Salvia_G. AU post-BotFA; Bilbo's too traumatized by Thorin's treatment of him during his gold-madness to stay in Erebor, but that doesn't stop the Company from coming to see him.
~
A Shot in the Dark, by Sliver_Pup. Fix-it timetravel fic, where Bilbo's the only one who came back. I love the little touches, like his telling Bard beforehand where to shoot Smaug, and asking Beorn for more provisions than originally planned. Both Thorin and Bilbo think a relationship is hopeless (Thorin because he thinks Bilbo's a devoted widower, and Bilbo because of canon).
~
An Expected Journey, by MarieJacquelyn. Fix-it fic; Bilbo comes back after his death of old age, and tries to prevent nearly everything.
~
An Unexpected Proposal, by Earenial. AU post-BotFA; Thorin's on enough meds to think a Darcyesque marriage proposal will work without an apology for his behavior first. Bilbo turns him down, and the rest of the story concerns his return to Erebor years later and Thorin's terrible courting attempt.
~
Clarity of Vision, by Mithen. AU where Smaug doesn't come, so the quest that brings Thorin & co. to Bilbo's Shire is of a different nature. *Bonus of a sequel, which delves into an alternative Ring story.
~
Gardening (Part 1 of the Good Earth series), by The Feels Whale. Written after the 1st Hobbit film came out, it offers an alternative ending to the entire Ring story, through improbable reproductive habits of Hobbits.
~
King and Dragonheart, by Manic_intent. AU, a Temeraire-style universe where Bilbo and his dragon Myrtle are ambassadors to Erebor during the lead-up to a war.
~
Lay down your sweet and weary head, by Elenothar. Fix-it fic, Thorin's the only one who came back, and he returns on the day Smaug comes (and shoots him, because he is never doing that exile again).

Other Pairings and Gen:

~
Para Bellum, by Ryuuzakochou. Humorous gen; the reason Bilbo isn't great with his sword is because like all hobbits he's a trained martial artist, and his family's style is weaponless. (Every Hobbit was kung-fu fighting...)
~
Please Act Now To Claim Your Prize, by Antarctica_or_bust. Gen, humor; it's too bad Thorin's sales pitch for the Company sounds like a Nigerian Prince scam.
~
Slumbers Deep and Dreams of Gold, by mithen. A series of moments in the travels of Bilbo & the Company - but the highlight is the final Afterlife story. Gen, but with Thorin/Bilbo undertones.
~
Spin the Sky, by agirlnamedchuck. Soulmate fic - one of the ones where hobbits have names scrawled on them and dwarves know when they hear them sing. Unusually, it's Bilbo/Fili/Kili. AU post-BotFA, thankfully.
~
Strangers at the Door, by Antarctica_or_bust. Humorous gen; what if Gandalf left the dwarven sign for nefarious happenings on Bag End's door? Lobelia gets a lot of visitors, that's what. (My favorite is when she actually purchases cufflinks from a thief, since they are a bargain.)
~
The House of Ri series, by Thorinsmut. Gen, focusing on Dori, Nori and Ori. Brothers, certainly, except for the ways they technically aren't.
~
To Turn the Tide of Heaven, by LittleBigSpoon. A Fix-it fic; a positive take on the Orpheus myth featuring Kili as Eurydice and Tauriel as Orpheus. Kili/Tauriel, obviously.

Inactive WIPs:
~
Back Again, by Waugh. Fix-It fic, where Bilbo comes back during the Fell Winter of his youth. Much goes AU from there on. Notable for good characterization of Bilbo's cousin and Aragorn's parents (who are quite young here).
~
Epic, by bubbysbub. Fix-it fic, where both Thorin and Bilbo go back with their memories to a few weeks prior to the quest. Thorin/Bilbo.
~
Into The Fire, by Blackdragonqueen. Fix-it fic, Thorin goes back. The Valar give him one year to both fix the fall of the line of Durin and prevent the War of the Ring... which is tricky, since they didn't actually explain that to him. Extra points for the rest of the Company slowly realizing that Thorin is a precog at the very least (he gives himself away with little details, and for once the characters catch them!).
~
The Heir Apparent, by ChasingPerfectionTomorrow. Partial Fix-It: Tauriel saves Kili's life at BotFA, but Fili and Thorin still die. It's time to find out if Kili can be King - and from Dain to Thranduil, he has a lot of detractors. Kili/Tauriel, currently UST only.
~
The Vicar of Erebor, by Leupagus. AU - and while I usually don't care for all-human AUs, this one is basically a Jane Austen style story with a few modern updates (Bilbo is both female and a Vicar, so this version of Middle Earth is more liberal than Regency England).

Active WIPs:

~
Sansukh, by determamfidd. The Dwarven Afterlife, featuring Thorin & his company watching over the dwarves of Erebor, as well as their old burglar Bilbo - and then the Ring happens. Thorin/Bilbo, UST so far for obvious reasons.
~
The Heart of Erebor, by TheTimelessCycle. Gen, partial fix-it: alone amongst the dwarven company, Kili does not fall to the gold madness. Instead he aids Bilbo in handing over the Arkenstone, and in so doing changes the path of the conflict to come.
