trace_by_echoHarry Potter was, no lie, my Big Name Fandom from 1999 to 2003. We parted ways after book 5, but I occasionally drift in via crossovers or specific authors. I particularly like the characters of pre-OOTP Harry, Snape & Draco (probably due to the 3-Year Summer and the fanon it created), Neville and Luna in any context, and Percy Weasley (whom I still feel was cut a raw deal). I still have some recs, but many are dated, as they come from before The Order of the Phoenix and the mass of character deaths during and post-OotP. (Also, to further date myself, the Great Zabini Debate was raging! Boy, or Girl? Or even "Zambini"?) Those which are WIPs, are marked with ***. Those which are written pre-Order of the Phoenix are in a separate section at the end.

~A Brother to Basilisks, by Lomonaaeren. AU, during 3rd year Harry goes to the Chamber of Secrets and finds an egg - the basilisk within becomes his bonded companion, and the plot changes snowball from there.
~House Proud, by astolat. Non-epilogue compliant. Author summary: "His house liked Draco Malfoy more than it liked him." Bonus for making purebloods creepy and attractive simultaneously.
~Never Grow A Wishbone, by shanastoryteller. When anti-Slytherin prejudice is so strong that barely any students are willing to join that house, McGonagall turns to Draco Malfoy as the best possible candidate for Potions teacher.
~Reparatio, by astolat. Non-epilogue compliant. Hermione is trapped in another dimension and Harry agrees to a deal with Draco to save her: pretend to date in order to improve the Malfoys' social standing. Bonus for Harry's sudden extended family appearing.
~Slithering, by astolat. Non-epilogue compliant. After the end of the war, Draco's left to clean up his manor - which is full of dead Muggles, tortured Muggleborns, and a trap under the floor that could doom the Wizarding World. Bonus for Draco's accidental pets.
~Survival is a Talent, by Shanastoryteller. AU, with soulmates: Harry and Draco find out they're a match when their skin touches during the duel in book 2. Canon changes spiral out from there. ***WIP.
~The Turn!Verse Series, by Saras_Girl. Compliant with the DH Epilogue, for once, but thankfully not for long; Harry gets a chance to see an alternate life, and decides to change his own.

~The Marriage Stone, by Josephine Darcy. A story of polite Wizarding Society, marriage contracts, and surprising compatibility. ***Dead WIP. Post OotP, but written as if an AU 5th year occurred.
~The White Road, by Perverse-idyll. In the afterlife, Lily sees two ways her son's life could go, and finds herself surprised to support Harry/Snape over Harry/Ginny. Warning: Lily's afterlife allows for watching the living at a pornlike level of closeness; also references to past Lily/Snape.

~Harry Potter and the Really Round-About Way of Finding a Horcrux, by floweringjudas. Harry becomes entangled in Weasley Family Feuding, and somehow ends up firmly on Team Percy.
~Sexetera, ad infinitum, by nqdonne. Really, when one thinks that the Groundhog's Day loop is for oneself alone, it can be difficult not to go insane from the stress. Percy chooses to bang his way through all his acquaintances, and in doing so, realizes he's not the only one looping.

~May Contain Nuts, by Scoradh. Harry/George, post-DH, non-epilogue compliant. Harry needs a little more direction in his life, and George needs something a bit more serious.
GEN FIC
~A Just City series, by elumish. What if anyone in the Ministry had had a brain, or if the British Wizarding society had a functioning justice system?
~A New Beginning, by LullabyKnell. The readers can figure out that Draco Malfoy went back in time to the summer before first year, but the POV character Narcissa is left baffled and worried. This fic would benefit from being expanded, I feel.
~Black Sheep, by inhellorinhighwater. Percy hasn't bothered contacting his family in years, having chosen to live happily and polyamorously. Charlie Weasley isn't satisfied with radio silence.
~blood will tell but often it tells too much, and sequel rather start a family than finish one, by elumish. Percy as an Oskar Schindler-Chiune Sugihara figure in the Ministry (he forged papers to keep the Muggleborns alive) who doesn't feel proud of it and has no idea how to tell his family.
~Calculation, by Fringeperson. Harry Potter's true passion was calculation - numbers and otherwise. A smart!Harry fic.
~Children of the Sun series, by Lomonaaren. AU, magical people all have familiars made of precious metals. It means something that Harry's is golden. ***WIP.
~D.S.S. Requirement, by Esama. AU: Lee Jordan uses the Room of Requirement to "find" a spaceship, and suddenly the future plans of the D.A. members go in a sci-fi direction. Technically a Stargate crossover, but it never matters what kind of spaceship they found, so...
~End of the Line, by Shewhoguards. The British Wizarding Afterlife involves trains and a station attended by a familiar Discworld character who speaks in perpetual capslock (hint, hint). A nice ensemble fic.
~Fox Ears, by The Starhorse. George Weasley fixes one of the Deathly Hallows deaths using a canon-compliant method. His brother Charlie is his assistant and enabler. As I hated this particular death too, this was a particularly welcome fic.
~Harry Potter and the Nest of Snakes, by elumish. Usually, I don't find AUs with Slytherin-Harry to be in-character (for him, or for anyone else), but this one is working out well. Some hints of Draco-->Harry, but I suspect they won't pan out until there are distant sequels.
~His Own Man, by crunchysunrise. A time travel AU caused/instigated at the end of DH. ***Dead WIP.
~How Xenophilius Lovegood Saved Britain, by Arpad Hrunta. A short correspondence between Harry and Gabrielle Delacour leads to the magical British bureaucracy being dismantled through the efforts of Muggle Britain and international allies. Background Harry/Luna.
~Like a Malfoy series, by Lomonaaren. AU, the Malfoys figure out that Harry is Draco's long-lost twin brother under a glamour from Sirius Black. ***WIP.
~Noble and Most Ancient, by Nomad. Crossover with Black Books, and a hilarious one at that. Bernard is one of *those* Blacks, and has an inheritance coming his way.
~Other People's Choices, by Lomonaaren. AU, when the Sorting Hat gives Harry the sword in the Chamber of Secrets, it also re-Sorts him into Slytherin.
~Percy Take the Wheel, by KittySmith. AU, an accident while Arthur's tinkering in the garage kills Molly and sends Arthur into a coma. With the oldest siblings away, it falls on Percy to keep the family together. ***WIP.
~Percy Weasley and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day by LullabyKnell, and its inspiration by Elidyce. Percy (Ron in the inspiration fic) fails to transfigure Scabbers into a teacup, so McGonagall reverses the transformation, only to find Pettigrew on her classroom floor.
~Princeps series, by Lomonaaren. Harry goes back in time to be the Defense teacher during the 1970s. This means having influence over the Slytherins who would've otherwise become Death Eaters.
~Magical Relations, by Evansentranced. Both Dudley and Harry get Hogwarts letters. ***Dead WIP.
~Sense of the Soul, by Umbrae Calamitas. Time-travel fix-it, and a rare Ron-centric one. He goes back to the summer before Hogwarts - the day when his unnoticed talent at the Sight first manifested; he can use that as an excuse for preventing the future, but he's suffering from so much PTSD, it's distressing to the Weasleys and to the reader. ***Dead WIP.
~Shadow Boxing, by Magicicada. Dudley's grown up, all of a sudden.
~The Switchverse, by corvidae9. Hogwarts has a program in place to randomly reassign some students to different Houses partway through their time at school. ***Dead WIP, goes through PoA.
~Swung By Serafim, by flamethrower. AU, Fix-It; Lockhart actually successfully (for a given definition of success) erases Harry and Ron's memories, but more of Harry's than he intended. The repercussions destroy the canon path, and replace it with something much better. Snape as the POV character. Background ships of Sirius/Remus, OFC/Luna, Ron/the Patils, Hermione/Viktor Krum, and several more, but Harry and Snape don't seriously date anyone (Snape may be somewhere on the ace spectrum, and Harry has a small fling with Cho and Cedric that doesn't matter in the long run).
~The Best Revenge, and Sequel Time of the Basilisk, by Arsinoe de Blassinville. Background Snape/Charity Burbage. When he's assigned to pick up Harry rather than Hagrid, Snape acts like a sane adult and removes an obviously-abused Harry from the Dursleys. Kudos for a consistently reasonable portrait of the HP characters, particularly the adults.
~This Lord Business series, by Lomonaaren. AU, Harry becomes Lord Slytherin by right of conquest (technically - since he killed a basilisk). He gets a mix of followers after that. ***WIP.
~Unspeakable Truths, by Irisen. Time-travel AU: Percy goes back into his pre-Hogwarts body, after nearly everyone on the Light side has died. But what can a mere kid do to prevent the end of the Wizarding World? ***Dead WIP.
~Wait, What?, by Publicola. Each chapter is an exploration of those little nonsensical scenes throughout the series that drove me - and apparently other readers - bonkers. (Ex. the first night in Hogwarts, when everyone introduces themselves at the Gryffindor table, Neville casually announces that his family constantly tried to kill him to make him perform magic, and in the book not a single person thinks that fact is remarkable.)
~When the Wolf Comes Home, by roachpatrol. Time-travel fix-it: Draco has been sent back to his 11-year-old body, but even time-travel doesn't erase a werewolf bite. ***Dead WIP.

~Skinny Dipping, by Icarus. Harry/Percy. Two fics exploring Percy and Harry having a fling, and then teasing each other about it later.
